Catnip – A Brief History

We are all familiar with catnip, it’s added into cat treats, cat toys and can be purchased in its raw form but what actually is it? Well our curious side got the best of us too.

What is Catnip?

Catnip, also known as Nepeta Cataria, is a perennial herb which is a member of the mint family.

It has many other names, such as field balm, cat mint, catnep and catwort and is not only attractive to cats and butterflies but it can be a great pollinator plant for bees 🐝.

Where does catnip come from?

The plant was indigenous to Europe and Asia and was believed to have been introduced to North America by European settlers. 🌎

What was catnip originally used for?

Back in the 1600s, catnip was believed to have medicinal purposes to treat ailments such as nervous headaches and nervousness. It was infused with teas, juice, tincture and was even smoked or chewed.

The use of Catnip for medical purposes fell away shortly after this due to the discovery of other drugs that were more suited to treating the ailments.

What effect does Catnip have on cats?

The effects of catnip will depend on each individual cat.

Some cats have been found to roll around in the plant or rub against it and then have outbursts of energy (also known as Zoomies). Other cats have a more relaxed and calming experience.

The two cats behind the Ozzy & Dart brand love catnip and it affects them both very differently.

Ozzy becomes chilled out and likes to stare you out…. Dart, on the other hand, lives up to his name and can visit every room in the house in 5.4 seconds.
